Welcome Back!
Even not having a full week at
home it has been busy. Sometimes travel makes you happy to return home, sometimes
it just brings more work J Have you had the same problem? Well, it has made eating interesting and on
day three of goulash it was time to jazz things up a bit.
First, a bit of food trivia for
you. Have you ever wondered if you are
eating a hotdish or casserole? Do you know the difference? Depending on where you live you may not have
even heard the two terms and some places use them interchangeably. They are decidedly
different however.
A hotdish is a type of casserole
but is always referred to a main dish with a specific set of ingredients. It
must have a protein, veggies, a crispy topping, and cream of something soup
cooked in a casserole dish. Many leftovers may be hot, may be in a dish, but
don’t qualify as hotdish.
Casseroles on the other hand is
simply a one dish meal served from a casserole dish. Unlike a hotdish, it need
not be a main dish. That holiday favorite side of green beans topped with
crispy onions? Yep it is a casserole. A breakfast meal with eggs, sausage,
cheese baked in the oven? You got it, another casserole. One exception to this are pastas such as
lasagna. Those are almost universally referred
to as a baked pasta not a casserole.
Casseroles are a great, easy, way
to utilize those leftovers you have hanging around, in this case it was the
left over goulash. This meal only took a few minutes and has only two added ingredients.
I place a single meal sized portion of the goulash in a small baking dish,
topped with shredded cheese and jalapenos, baked until the cheese was crispy.
Easy, fast, tasty. Who could want more, really?
Doing something similar to this is a great way to use those leftovers
and can be sized appropriately for a large group or a single serving.
Now you decide, hotdish or casserole?
