The kindness of friends

Hello there :)

Friday after work I stopped to say hello to a couple friends. We sat, we talked, they sent me home with leftovers. As one of them has a life goal of being mysterious, I won't mention who they are, only that their help and kindness is very much appreciated.

That night I heated up some of the leftovers for supper adding only salt and pepper as well as a little bacon. Oh, as I needed liquid in the skillet and still have beer bread ingredients in the fridge I used Corona. It added a good flavor when combined with the cabbage, potatoes, and sausage. Today, I had some of the remained leftovers for breakfast as well. I heated it up in the microwave, wrapped it in a tortilla, added hot sauce and a cross multi-national breakfast burrito was born. Stop judging my breakfast choices, I can hear you laughing from here :)  Dinner time came around tonight and my plan was a BLT sandwich right up until I pulled my tomato from the fridge. The texture of the tomato was more like the slime that was popular with kids a few years ago than an actual tomato so to the trash it went.  Next up, more leftovers.

This time I fried up some bacon, added the leftovers provided by the mysterious friend, dropped in a large forkful of sauerkraut, one sliced jalapeno, and some frozen corn. After adding salt and pepper I fried it all up in the skillet, slid it in to a bowl and supper was served.  I know, some of you are judging my choices about now with what I added to the dish but don't knock it until you try it. This turned out really tasty, doubled the amount of food that I started with, and was extremely low cost as everything was on hand already.  This dish is full of flavor! Sauerkraut was a tasty addition, the corn turned out better than expected, and jalapeno added just the right amount of heat. The one thing I did wrong was not add enough liquid so here shortly I have some skillet scrubbing planned as my evening activity.

As a completely different way to change something like this up you could add sliced apples and some apple cider vinegar to the original leftovers.  Trust me, the apple flavor combined with the sausage, potatoes, and cabbage will be great!  It is very similar to a dish I have had several times before and it has always turned out well.

One of the key things to remember when working in the kitchen is not to be afraid to try new things. If you don't like it, don't make it again, but if you don't experiment a little bit how will you ever find something new?
